2021.12.05 23:57 Alexandersleak What do you want in a fantasy race?

I read a post a while ago talking about how we need more non human main characters in Fantasy and Sci-Fi. they said we need more non human species to improve the immersion. that they should have a different culture and ideology then us.
one user brought up Ahsoka Tano and Plo-Koon.
someone else responded "they are just humans but with weird skin and head tentacles."
i found this very interesting, because that is the kind of thing i look for when it comes to non human fantasy races.
don't get me wrong i love races that can easily pass for humans. Elves, Dwarfs and Hobbits, and i love super fantastical races like giants, sea monsters and dragons.
give me a humanoid with green skin, four eyes and a tail. the fantasy race doesn't have to be super crazy and out of this world monstrous. as long as they don't look exactly like humans but with small differences that can be disguise with a hat or glasses, i think they are going to be vary interesting.
so what do you want and look for in a fantasy race?

2021.12.05 23:57 Taqwacore Stochastic violence is the inevitable result of "hate the sin and not the sinner"

I'm often critical of the concept of "Hate the sin and not the sinner". I spent years thinking this was a good thing, that we're hating ideas or behaviours, not people. However, as I get older, I've come to the conclusion that we as a species often struggle to separate other people from their ideas and behaviour. To be clear, I think some people can separate ideas from people, and they can hate the sin and not the sinner, but I would argue that such people are the exception and not the norm.
One term used in this debate that people may not be familiar with is the concept of stochastic violence. Stochastic violence is a concept whereby consistently demonizing or dehumanizing a targeted group or individual results in violence becoming increasingly statistically likely, but not easily predicted with any accuracy.
Lets look at two common examples of "Hate the sin and not the sinner" and at how this has led to stochastic violence. I'll be taking these examples from both theism and atheism.
Theists often talk about hating the sin and not the sinner in the context of homosexuality. I've seen some Christians and Muslims argue that being same-sex attracted isn't the problem, but that the sin rests in acting upon those impulses. Even if true, I'm sure most people would agree that even where homosexuality is legal, the LGBTQ+ community often remains a target for community violence and discrimination. An example would be the 2019 arson attack against the offices of SisTers PGH in Pittsburgh. SisTers PGH is a transgender resource center led by black and transgender people. While we don't know who the perpetrators were behind this attack, it seems very likely that this was a hate crime that came about as a result of years of repeated indoctrination into the belief that LGBTQ+ people are bad. Therefore, "Hate the sin and not the sinner" either doesn't provide any protection against violence, or is actually the cause for violence because it creates an atmosphere in which we regard it as acceptable to hate something.
Atheists, on the other hand, don't usually talk about hating the sin and not the sinner, or at least not in such explicit terms. Nonetheless, most atheists would probably be familiar with the idea, "We hate the idea of religion, not the people who follow the religion"; that is essentially a paraphrasing of "Hate the sin and not the sinner". Despite this phrase being in somewhat popular usage, incidence such as the 2015 Chapel Hill shooting would suggest that some people might transition from hating the sin of religion to hating the sinner: people who are religious. This is one of several violence incidents in recent years, but I would argue that such violent incidents were less frequent in the past because "hating religion" was less popular in the past. It is only somewhat recently, over the past 20 years or so, that hating religion has become more mainstream, and the uptake in violence against religious people by atheists over the past one or two decades is a reflection of the trend toward "consistently demonizing or dehumanizing a targeted group".
And so I would argue that it is the process of repeatedly demonizing ideas and behaviours that one hates (e.g., homosexuality or religion) that unconsciously results in elevated levels of hate toward those who engage in the hated ideas or behaviour, thus making violence against such people appear to be an increasingly palatable idea. In effect, the more we hate homosexuality or religion (or a specific religion), the more likely we are to either become violent or unintentionally talk someone else into acting violently toward homosexuals, the religious, or the followers of certain religions.
_________________
A subsidiary argument to this, if we agree that hating the sin and not the sinner doesn't work and that it can lead to violence, concerns how best to go about being critical of ideas and behaviour without increasing hate and violence. I think this is probably an argument for another day, but something to ponder nonetheless.

2021.12.05 23:57 SquintyEyedAsian Mark of the beast/chip?

I was looking at a video about those chips you can get inserted into your hand, but when I looked at the comments, they were all talking about “the mark of the beast” and “the end is coming” and about how they loved Jesus and belonged to god. I’m not Christian so I was just confused. They were also saying how the Bible predicted it, and considering that back when it was written, things of this nature didn’t exist, that confused me even more. Can any of you guys elaborate?
